Foods that cure

Did you know doing regular exercise can reduce a family’s genetic risk of becoming obese by 40%?  In addition to exercise, there are a number of foods you might just find in your household cupboards that will add a positive effect to your over all well being and perhaps cure a minor ailment.

1.  Start your day with 4 oz glass of 100% orange juice.  The fructose in orange juice has vitamin C which provides energy, metabolizes the iron and then helps your system move oxygen through your bloodstream.

2.  A handful of raisins contains enough polyphenols (anti-oxidant phytochemical) to help maintain your cardiovascular health and bring down your blood pressure.

3.  Like dried apricots?  Consuming just 8 apricot halves will supply the nutrients you need to keep minerals from accumulating in urine and forming kidney stones.

4.  Smell a green apple!  If you suffer from tension headaches, you’ll be happy to hear that smelling a green apple has been shown to reduce muscle contractions in both the head and neck.

5.  Bananas and stress?  By eating a medium banana (around 105 calories), you’ll be helping your brain produce brain mellowing serotonin!

6.  Tuna and your moods……A 3 oz. serving of canned white tuna has 800 mg. of omega-3′s.  Research suggests the omega – 3′s can cure your blues.

7.  Cabbage cures ulcers……Sulforaphane (also in broccoli)  is a powerful compound found in cabbage.  It fights the bacteria that causes gastric and peptic ulcers before they tear up your gut.

8.  Tea and gas relief.  Chamomile tea can ease digestive inflammation and spasms in your colon.  Two or three cupfuls may be necessary to feel relief.

9.  Pears and pectin.  One medium pear has enough dietary fiber in the form of pectin, to flush out the bad cholesterol.  LDL cholesterol is the bad cholesterol and is a risk factor in heart disease.

It’s the small changes in your daily living that can add up to big dividends.  Try adding a few of these choices and see what happens!

Top 10 Warning Signs for Pain-Pill Prescription Abuse

Aug15

Do you know what worries me more than the national debt, jobless numbers and the war in Afghanistan?? Prescription pain killer drugs! They are affecting more normal, everyday people in all walks of life than you might imagine! Prescription drugs have become the most commonly abused category of drugs….replacing marijuana, cocaine, heroin, methamphetamine and other drugs combined. Besides the obvious problem of addiction, which the medical field has added to by increasing dosages, these pills can cost anywhere from $30 to $40 per pill! Unfortunately, the ease in obtaining some of these pills has made it too easy for the local drug seller.

Sadly, narcotic painkillers like OxyContin, Percocet and Vicodin, (also known as cotton, killers, and vikes) sedatives and tranquilizers like Xanax and Valium, (also known as z-bars) are increasing in popularity because they’re so easy to acquire.

The danger in the prescription

Even minors are sometimes able to order them with a prescription through online pharmacies. There may also be a perception, especially among younger people, that prescription drugs are safer than illegal street drugs. Most people don’t lock up their prescription medications, nor do they discard them when they are no longer needed for their intended use, making them vulnerable to theft or misuse.

While these drugs do provide pain relief, they can also cause individuals’ bodies to “crave” the drug in order to feel normal. This feeling of “normal” gets tougher with prolonged use and ultimately leads to increased dosages and eventually to the challenging state of chemical dependency.

Here are 10 of the most common warning signs to watch out for:

1. Social withdrawal – a person may withdraw from friends, family and most social interaction.

2. Change in personality – Daily responsibilities become secondary to the need the drug provides and you’ll see changes in a person’s normal behavior.

3. Drug usage will go up as the tolerant level increases to the effects of the prescribed dosage.

4. Defensive – increased drug use will lead to user trying to hide their dependency.

5. Preoccupation with obtaining another prescription even after the original medical condition should be improved.

6. Personal hygiene may diminish as the need for drug usage increases. Sleep and eating habits may change as well.

7. Continued conversation about pain associated with the injury or medical condition that caused need for the prescription. This is to justify continued use.

8. Forgetfulness and blackouts may start occurring with prolonged use.

9. Being extremely edgy and swings in moods is a big red flag.

10. Increased sensitivity to lights, sounds and normal everyday stress is also a tip off.

Fortunately the news about this problem is beginning to reach the right ears. The state of Florida has 8 deaths per day due to misuse of prescribed pain medication. The rehab facilities are over-crowded with pain pill addicts. There has been a nationwide crack down on the physicians writing prescriptions and legislature is in the works for a tracking system and already implemented in some states. I’ve personally seen what pain pill addiction can do to a happy young family with their whole lives ahead of them. If you suspect an addiction in someone you love and care for, steer them towards a facility that can help. Don’t assume this problem will go away easily. According to the experts, pain pill addiction is one of the toughest addictions to conquer on your own.

Whether you’re 18 or 80, moving can be a daunting task. Some people would rather go to the dentist for a root canal or give birth than move and personally, I can’t say I blame them. I’ve moved 7 times since 2003 and we’re getting ready to do it one more time. Maybe this “8th” one will be the charm. Honestly it doesn’t matter if you’re moving ten miles or a thousand miles! Short of a death in the family, moving is at the top of the stress chart. The key is to be organized, plan ahead and tell yourself, “it doesn’t all have to be finished in a day!”

Based on my own personal experience, here are just a few tips to make moving day a bit less hectic and stressful….If you follow most of these tips, you’ll save yourselves a ton of headaches, pain and stress. I’m also basing these tips on the assumption you’re using the help of professional movers! READ MORE »

lb of fat

lb of fat!

Is this not the ugliest glob you’ve ever seen?  Well I’m here today to tell you 12 of these clumps of cellular fat have disappeared off my body and hopefully will never be found again!  The 15 week journey with my personal trainer is over and the conclusion ended in sweet success.  I got rid of  22 inches,  12 pounds of extra weight, and 12% body fat.  Is the journey over??  No Way!  I will be cutting back on my personal training hours but my plan is to continue to work out 5 or 6 days a week, and perhaps lose a few more pounds, or at the very least, change a few more areas into muscle.

So, how did I do it? And over the holidays to boot?  READ MORE »
